Nyagatare Irrigation Project

The Project was completed using a solar-powered submersible pump system with one active and one standby pump. The installation features HDPE pipes,  90mm PN10 as the main line and 90mm, 63mm, and 50mm PN10 for the lateral network, ensuring efficient and reliable water distribution.

The system uses solar-powered submersible pump sets: one pump is in operation and one pump is kept as standby. It is proposed to provide HDPE pipes of 90 mm PN10 as the main pipeline to supply water to the sub-mains from the reservoir. HDPE pipes of 90 mm, 63 mm, and 50 mm PN10 are used for lateral lines.

Since solar radiation is available for approximately 6 hours per day, the irrigation system has been designed to irrigate crops within 6 hours on alternate days.

The entire operation of the sprinkler and surface irrigation system depends on the intensity of solar radiation available in the field. In cases of low solar radiation intensity, irrigation may need to be postponed to the next day.

Sprinkler submain (buried)

HDPE pipes of 90 mm PN 10 buried underground and 10 Sprinkler ydrants are taken off ar every 24m distance on each submain.

Sprinkler Hydrant

G.I valve 2″, HDPE tee 2 inch, G.I 2inch pipes – G.I 2inch elbow are taken off every22m distance at each water application (HDPE pipes 50mm PN10)- Hydraulic valve with pressure pilot at each submains Hydraulic valves(3″) with pressure pilot are provided at each submain for on off purpose and pressure regulation purposeas per the requirement.

Butterfly valve 3″ – Flush valve

Butterfly valves 3″ are provided at each submain end to flush out the submain

Air release valves at submain

Pvc air release valves 2″ are provided on HDPE mainline of 110mm

HDPE main lines

HDPE pipeline of 110mm ON 10 is provided as a feeding main to all sprinkler submains(old system), HDPE pies of 90mm PN 10 is submain pipes fedding lateral pipes of 50mm PN10(new system)

Non return valve

C.I. Non-Return Valve

A 4-inch C.I. non-return valve is provided on the mainline to prevent water hammer effects and back pressure in both the existing and the new systems.

Automatic Quick Pressure Relief Valve

An automatic quick pressure relief valve (2″) is installed downstream of the pump unit in the existing system. The valve releases any sudden buildup of pressure in the pipeline, thereby preventing pipe damage or failure.

A 3-inch HDPE check valve is installed on the delivery pipe and connected to both the new and existing systems. In addition, 35 HDPE check valves (2″) are installed on the lateral lines feeding all hydrants.

Manual Bypass cum Pressure Relief Valve

A 3-inch manual bypass cum pressure relief valve is provided on the two distribution lines downstream of the pump unit. The valve is designed to release sudden pressure buildup within the system and protect the pipelines from damage or rupture.

Filtration Unit

A screen filtration unit consisting of a 200 mm diameter casing pipe is provided to filter water and remove physical impurities such as silt, clay, sand, and other suspended solid particles before distribution through the irrigation system.

New submersible solar pump unit

Solar Pumping System

It is proposed to provide one AC submersible solar pump with a power rating of 13.9 kW, a maximum head of 80 m, and a rated discharge of 28 m³/hour. The pump will be supplied with a 14 kW MPPT charger, 380 V (new system). The existing system is currently non-operational due to damage to the MPPT controller.

Number of Solar Pump Sets

One new solar pump set will be installed and operated as the primary working unit. Two additional pump sets will be retained as standby units after repair.

Hydrants

A hydrant system has been installed over 15 ha for surface irrigation.

Hose Pipes

PVC hose pipes reinforced with 1.5 mm wire are provided. A spray nozzle is fixed at the end of each hose pipe for manual irrigation.

HDPE Lateral Lines

HDPE pipelines of 63 mm and 50 mm diameter, PN10 rating, are provided as feeder mains to all hydrants, to which the hose pipes are connected.

Water Reservoirs

Two excavated water ponds, each with a storage capacity of 250 m³, are installed at the upper part of the land.

Dam Sheet

The dam sheet is made of HDPE material and has the following specifications:

  • Tensile strength: ≥ 300 N/mm²

  • Tear strength: ≥ 18 N/mm²

  • Elongation at break: ≥ 394%

  • Shrinkage: 0%

  • Bursting strength: 30 daN/cm²

  • UV treatment: 100%

  • Recyclable: 100%

  • Thickness: 0.9–1.0 mm

Dam Sheet Coverage

The dam sheet is covered with iron sheets supported by a framework of steel tubes and a reinforced concrete structure to protect the reservoir and enhance durability.
